Описание: Благополучная на первый взгляд семья начинает распадаться, когда отец семейства лишается работы. Не имея смелости признаться об этом родным, он скрывает это и продолжает каждый день делать вид, что уходит на работу. Его жена подозревает неладное, но предпочитает закрывать на это глаза и не вмешиваться. Старший сын вдруг сообщает о желании служить в американской армии, а младший тайком берет уроки игры на фортепиано.
Сценарий написан Киёси Куросавой и Сатико Танака на основе романа Макса Мэнникса «Dance of the Dragon».
Токийская Соната стала самым неожиданным сюрпризом Канского Фестиваля и, получив высокую оценку критиков, завоевала Приз жюри в секции Un Certain Regard впервые для фильма японского производства.
