Описание: Оркестр Дайго, в который тот только устроился, распустили. Оставшись без работы, ему приходится продать виолончель и перебраться с женой в провинцию, где мать оставила ему дом в наследство. В газете он находит объявление приглашающее на работу в агентство, которое он принимает за туристическое. Но каково же было удивление, когда оказывается, что эта работа будет состоять в подготовке тела покойного к прощанию...
Departures получил Оскар на 81-ой церемонии награждения в категории Лучший иностранный фильм.
Всего он получил свыше 60-ти международных и внутренних наград, включая основные призы кинофестивалей в Монреале, Гаваях, Палм Спрингс, а также Китайской и Японской Киноакадемии.
По результатам награждений Японской Киноакадемии Departures выиграл в 10-ти номинациях: Лучший фильм, Лучший режиссер, Лучший сценарий, Лучший актер, Лучший актёр второго плана, Лучшая актриса второго плана, Лучший оператор, Лучший монтаж, Лучший звук, Лучший свет.
Релиз Departures состоялся 13 сентября 2008 и во время проката достиг лишь 4-ой строчки в топе японского бокс-офиса. В первый же викенд после награждения Оскар фильм возглавил топ, заработав $3.3 миллиона. Ни один фильм до сих пор не лидировал в бокс-офисе так поздно после первого выхода в кинотеатрах.
С первоначальной идеи образа главного героя до готового фильма прошло около десяти лет работы.
