After graduating from high school, with help from friends he sneaked into classes at Chukyo University in Nagoya, joined the theater club, and started writing plays. In 1976, he left the club and started the theater company TPO Shi-dan. After TPO Shi-dan disbanded in 1981, he set up the companies Suisei '86, which lasted from 1982 to 1986, and then Project Navi from 1986 to 2003. He won the 1984 Kishida Drama Award with 11 nin no shonen (Eleven Boys), and the 1990 Kinokuniya Theater Award for Personal Achievement with Yuki o watatte... Dai ni ko, Tsuki no akarusa (Across the Snow: The Second Draft & Moonlight). His play Hogiuta (Ode to Joy) has been translated into English and Russian, and was performed at the 1999 Seoul Theater Festival. From April 2006 to December 2007 he served as director of the Shiga Prefecture Center for Creation of Art for Citizens in Kusatsu.
