Half brother of Kansai Yamamoto. Niece Mirai Yamamoto, who is two years older than him, is married to Kippei Shiina, his co-star of Yuki ni negau koto (2005). Started his career as a model while he studied at Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku (Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music). Titled his directorial debut film Kakuto (2003) after the name of an artist group which he formed with his university friends. Briefly studied at NYU Film School.
