Bio

Jang Lee Hwang (HWANG Jang Lee / 황정리) is a Korean actor, son of Korean immigrants, born on Wednesday, December 13, 1944, in Osaka, Japan bombed by the Americans. A few months later, the family must return to Korea as the father's company was closed by the Japanese government.

At the age of 14 years, and against the wishes of his parents, the boy begins to take courses Taekwondo Korean martial arts. Subsequently, having tested for his 7th dan black belt, he became a martial arts instructor for the Korean and South-Vietnamese armies, specializing in taekwondo from 1965.

Hwang began his film career in Korea in the mid 70s. After acting in Korean movies, he came to work in Hong Kong in 1976 at the invitation of Ng See Yuen, the founder of Seasonal Films company.

Hwang has appeared in many other Hong Kong and Korean films such as No Retreat, No Surrender 2 and Game of Death II. In 1980, Hwang directed, produced, and starred as the hero in Hitman in the Hand of Buddha. Hwang quit acting in the early 1990s and returned to South Korea, where at first he ran a golf-tee manufacturing company and hotel in Seoul. He also ran a bodyguard agency. Hwang only made occasional film appearances; notably, two Korean films are Emperor of the Underworld (1994) and his final movie Boss (1996).

Trivia
  • Former taekwondo teacher of Korean Army
  • This Korean powerhouse actually killed a man in real life (in self-defense). It seems the man was a "knife expert" who claimed that the knife is superior to "any" form of unarmed combat. Wang disagreed with that "statement" and an argument soon followed where the "knife expert" challenged Wang to "prove" his point to which Wang declined, went to turn his back when the guy lunged at him. Wang turned and fired a "round-kick" hitting the guy "square" in the temple, killing him instantly.
