Shaolin Girl

General info
Original title: Shorin Shojo (少林少女)
Country: Hong Kong, Japan
Year: 2008
Genre: Action
IMDB Rating: 4.6 275 votes
Plot: Shaolin Girl is a sequel to the 2001 Stephen Chow Chinese comedy Shaolin Soccer. The sequel is a Japanese production, with Stephen Chow working as a producer of the film.

After completing her training at Shaolin Temple, kung fu disciple Rin (Shibasaki Kou) returns to her quiet Japanese hometown hoping to spread Shaolin kung fu to the masses. But it turns out her former master Iwai (Eguchi Yosuke) has long closed the dojo and is now running a Chinese noodle dig instead. Waitress Minmin (Kitty Zhang) convinces Rin to join her university's lacrosse team instead where she can apply her kung fu to sports. Rin, however, isn't very good at lacrosse or at controlling her own powers, a weakness that could spell disaster if exploited by the wrong people. Recognizing her great power, the phenomenally (and inexplicably) evil university president (Nakamaru Toru) launches a nefarious plan to bring Rin to the dark side.

Shaolin Girl
LoveHKfilm, by Kozo source: http://www.lovehkfilm.com/panasia/shaolin_girl.html
«There is some element of surprise in Shaolin Girl in that it goes from interesting to oddly boring to marvelously unfunny, and then to an insanely unsolicited level of audacious badness that has to be seen to be believed.»
movieXclusive.com, by Richard Lim Jr source: http://www.moviexclusive.com/review/shaolingirl/shaolingirl.htm
«Failing to balance the formula from the successful Shaolin Soccer and branching out to something new, Shaolin Girl ended up as a messy and unfunny Kungfu parody homage.»
A Nutshell Review, by Stefan S source: http://anutshellreview.blogspot.com/2008/06/shaolin-girl-shrin-shjo.html
«Even supporting appearances by characters from Shaolin Soccer couldn't save the day, and became ridiculous caricatures of themselves. Perhaps what could rescue Shaolin Girl, was a cameo by Chow who probably might have upped the credibility of this flick, but alas, knowing that it would stink, he rightfully kept his distance.»
The Japan Times Online, by MARK SCHILLING source: http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/ff20080418a3.html
«If I were the producer, I'd put Shibasaki — who has both the right attitude and skills for action — in real jeopardy, give her a real sword and make her really angry. Then we might see some real chop-socky excitement, instead of a pretty-but-bloodless simulacrum of the same. And Stephen Chow might make some of his money back.»
