Actors Shawn Yue and Ekin Cheng have won the Best Actor Award for the movie Rule #1 at the 12th Pucheon Film Festival in Korea. And Rule #1 was also in the running for the festival’s top competition - the Puchon Choice Feature - which included this year’s Korean blockbuster The Chaser and Hollywood entry The Objective.
«The biggest frustration here is that Rule No. 1 could have been really good had the filmmakers put more thought and effort into the story. As it is, the film is a watchable, entertaining ride, and a missed opportunity at something greater.»
«As a result, “Rule#1” comes only as likely the best genre offering, but also as one of the best films of any description from Hong Kong in 2008. Tong again shows himself to be a director worth watching, serving up a tightly wound and highly entertaining mixture which never pulls its punches en route to a genuinely harrowing climax.»
«Still, working with a pro Hong Kong team, Tong makes the most of the latter constraint, drawing perfs from his two leads (especially Cheng) that are much more contained than usual, and concentrating on atmosphere rather than CG.»
«Effectively intriguing and chilling, Rule No 1 is one of the best Asian horror movies this year. The fact that it’s written and directed by one of our born and bred talents is a fact that deserves even more praise. If you’re a fan of horror, make it then your number one rule not to miss this gem of a scare.»
