Plot: Life as a teenager isn't easy, and when your mother is lying in a coma following a suicide attempt, your father has abandoned the family, and your swimming coach puts the weight of the world on your shoulders, sometimes it's easy to get overwhelmed. Of course, not having a father to provide for the family means that finances aren't what they should be either, and as the medical bills pile up, sometimes it's better to just sit back, let the worries fade, and bask in one's fantasies about the beautiful woman who lives next door. Though a relationship with the lovely neighbor's daughter could provide a glimmer of joy in a life that seems to have spun out of control, it could also complicate things as her troubled past slowly comes into focus. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide
Jo he worked as assistant director for Im Soon-Rye's 'Three Friends', Byun Hyuk's 'Interview' and with Kim Ki-Duk for 'Birdcage Inn' and 'Bad Guy'.
Director Jo Chang-Ho: 'This is a commercial film, I don't want people to label it independent just because of its themes, and I hope it will break the stereotypes about 'Festival Films' being boring and hard to understand.'
The Peter Pan Formula had its world premiere at the recent Pusan International Film Festival, where it drew keen attention from festival programmers. The Peter Pan Formula won the Jury's Prize at France's Deauville Asian Film Festival in March, 2006. Also was screened on Berlin International Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival in 2006.
Jo Chang-ho received the Best Young Director award for The Peter Pan Formula at the 27th Durban International Film Festival. And actor On Joo-wan also won a Best Performance award by an actor in a leading role.
«DIRECTOR JO CHANG-HO: "I think there's a profound difference between just sleeping with someone and what In-Hee (Kim Ho-Jung) does to Han-Soo (On Ju-Wan). Just masturbating him without sleeping with him has a meaning, as she understands sex is not necessarily a way to solve Han-Soo's problems.»
«The film's strongest elements are its performances, particularly from On and Kim, and the low-key scenes of the early development of Hansoo's character. Watching him quietly navigate his new environment, the adult world, on his own is a treat. ... Cho's feature debut, which would have been better served with a touch more focus and a leaner story, nonetheless marks him as a director to watch.»
«Cho Chan-ho's debut feature is bursting at the seams with ideas. From coming-of-age metaphors to cod-psychology, it's all here. And that's the trouble. ... Chan-Ho displays flashes of directorial brilliance, particularly in terms of the relationships between the characters, and the performances are solid. However, the blurring of fantasy and fiction never quite comes off.»
«In retrospect, “The Peter Pan Formula” was a gripping and at times even shocking film that offered a lot for the viewer to chew on. The more disturbing scenes in the film will reverberate with the audience in different ways depending on their own personal acumen. While all these aspects made “The Peter Pan Formula” a heady film to watch, the second half did throw too much into the mix lessening its overall impact.»
«"The Peter Pan Formula" is an interesting coming-of-age art house movie and moreover features some food for thought, which (hobby-)psychoanalysts will have fun to work with. ... If the script wouldn't have been filled with so many half-baked ideas "The Peter Pan Formula" would have had the potential to be a really good drama. »

«The misleadingly titled "The Peter Pan Formula" brings a fresh coat of paint to many of the cliches of the genre but tries to pack too much into a single movie. Tightened by some 10 minutes -- and losing its artier moments, which sit ill with the semi-mainstream body of the movie -- this could prove an accessible festival item.»
«Cho shows us there are beacons of hope all around us, including the hope within ourselves, if we'd only bother to receive their signals that it's ok to let our guards down and be the vulnerable human beings that we are.»
