Plot: The film is set in a small, unnamed town in Korea where four dead women, from an eight-year-old girl to a middle-aged businesswoman, have been found in as many months, strung up and displayed in public places. The killer is much too careful and meticulous to give a chance to police.
Meanwhile, Gyeong-joo, a failing novelist whos novels constantly dismissed by editors due to violence and gory murder mysteries, kills his landlady in a fit of rage. He hits on the idea of staging a scene to look like another killing in the series, putting the cops on the wrong track. The police been fooled, but real killer is more than a little curious about what's going on.
«Our Town, even though it ultimately capitulates to the lugubriously Korean-style jeremiads on the decline of communal spirit and the evil effects of money on social relationships, is a rather decent mystery thriller that avoids insulting the viewer's intelligence and manages to hold its own against flashier crowd-pleasers like Seven Days.»
«There are so many places where this film could have gone wrong, so many places where it could easily have tipped over the edge into cheap sentimentality or broad caricature but somehow Young and his talented cast found the path through it. Very entertaining and technically impressive Our Town is one of Korea's most striking films of the past couple years.»
«More psychological than procedural, and more of a whydunit than a whodunit, this emotionally claustrophobic first feature by helmer Jeong Gil-yeong did poorly on local release late last year but is definitely worth a look-see by Asiaphile fest scouts and specialist ancillary labels.»
«It's hard to guess whether this is Mo's script or Jung il-young's direction, but someone somewhere miscalculated what would make for an exciting movie. ... The sad part is that the stars are giving the best they can to the film.»
«"Our Town" is an ambitious mix of genres, with director Jung working in elements of crime thriller, detective mystery, horror shocker and psychological character drama to create a darkly unique and original film. ... Jung’s direction is assured and elegant, especially impressive considering that this marks his debut feature.»
