Plot: A loner teen named Mosquito meets Dragon, Monk, White Monkey, and Dog Boy - all members of the ‘Gang of Princes’, when they helped him fight off bullies in his new school. As it turned out, this crazy company led by the Dragon enjoys great prestige in the local area, because Dragon's father Geta is a well-respected underworld kingpin who is in charge for the whole of Monga. Together they skip classes and spend their days getting into street fights, going clubbing and wooing girls. Geta teaches them about the laws of a brotherhood which they should always fight to protect their honour.
Soon, another gang attempts to muscle in on the action in Monga, taking out Monga’s gang bosses, including Geta. Friends are now at the heart of a ruthless gang war over territory.
Set in 1980s Bangka, otherwise known as Manka, an old Taipei district that is now part of the city’s Wanhua District.
Monga become a bestseller grossed more than NT$59.32 million (US$1.85 million) since it premiered in Taiwan on February 5. Its first day box office was NT$8.31 million, outshining 'Avatar's' first-day receipts of NT$6.97 million.
«Monga trends towards convention, the film has earned the goodwill to satisfy and even impress. The Wanhua District setting helps. ... Monga gives the district a distinct personality, making it the perfect cultural backdrop for these familiar characters and their well-worn struggles. Honor, friendship, family, loyalty and brotherhood – these themes are incredibly common for this genre, but Monga allows them the appearance of freshness.»
«MONGA is an adeptly staged and beautifully designed film, exuding a grandiose confidence that makes this tale of brotherhood feel much larger and grander than it in fact is. Splicing high school antics, fantasy sequences, back alley knife fights and riotous nights on the town together seamlessly, the first hour feels like one long montage of what it means to be a gangster, and to belong.»
«An engrossing, yet perhaps beautified gangster film. It's neither terrific nor terrible, but it's thoroughly engaging. ... The efforts of all shows visibly on the screen; the sets, costumes and hairstyles create an authentic 80's appearance, one which remains fresh in the memories of many.»
«With a stellar cast and entertaining storyline that weaves together action and drama, the film should do well with younger audience members who like to view the underworld through rose-tinted glasses.»
