Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler

General info
Original title: Kaiji: Jinsei Gyakuten Gêmu (カイジ 人生逆転ゲーム)
Country: Japan
Year: 2009
Genre: Drama
IMDB Rating: 6.4 242 votes
Plot: Kaiji is a near 30 year-old shop-boy. He is unable to find a steady job since graduating high school, and have neither money, nor girlfriend, nor even friends at all. However, he still believes in luck and spends all his money on cheap lottery-tickets.
One day a beautiful femme fatale shows up at his door, only to inform him that he is responsible for a huge loan taken by his friend (who has since gone missing) and whom he casually co-signed as a loan guarantor for. The company gives Kaiji two options to repay: he can spend the next 11 years in servitude, or try his luck for one night on a gambling ship «Espoire» for the chance to clear his debt. Kaiji accepts the proposal (of course, the latter one) and soon realizes that now his survival is at stake. Winner takes all. Loser leaves his life at the table.
  • Kaiji: The Ultimate Gambler is based on popular manga “Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji”, the most popular work of Nobuyuki Fukumoto.
  • The movie sequel is planned to be released in 2011

«In this live-action version, part of the fun is spotting common human flaws such as greed, temptation and the ugly façade of human beings. The movie has certainly showcased the strength of the original manga material thus explaining the glowing box-office in Japan in addition to a sequel being greenlit.»

«Like the rich elite who sit and sip champagne as they relish the suffering of Kaiji and his cohorts I could only see director Toya Sato and the producers of "Kaiji" the film being entertained by its game show strategies and hyper-dramatics. For those of us unfortunate enough to be sitting in the audience the whole experience is just painful. Not to give away any spoilers, but the fact that the film's ending leaves things wide open for a sequel or sequels makes me shudder. »
A Nutshell Review, by Stefan S source: http://anutshellreview.blogspot.com/2010/03/kaiji-ultimate-gambler-gambling.html
«The key entertaining moments in the film are of course the death-defying situations the gamblers are put through, and it turns out more to be like problem-solving coupled with going up against stacked odds. Fans of Kenichi Matsuyama will also be pleased that their idol had gotten a supporting role...Teruyuki Kagawa (of Tokyo Sonata) also shines as the main over-confident villain in the film...»
