Plot: Hiro and Shuu start dating in high school. Falling deep into first love romance they have almost forgotten about being a halfway between adult life and graduation, but happy days are interrupted by a single fact - Hiro is planning to apply for local Hokkaido university, but Shuu is going to leave Hokkaido and enter Tokyo university. The couple is on their first hard decision thinking over priorities in their life.
«Halfway is uncannily attuned to the rhythms and subtle changes of this young couple’s relationship, with all the petty squabbling, mind games, self-conscious posturing, and unbridled emotionalism this entails. Suggesting a distinctly Japanese brand of mumblecore, Halfway uses improvisation and ad-libbed dialogue to make what we see on screen feel almost like a documentary. »
«Lanky Okada's calm, patient sweetness neatly counterpoints pint-size Kitano's volatility and emotional absolutes. Much of the dialogue is improvised, but the adolescent thesps embody their characters so thoroughly, plunging so wholeheartedly into every moment, that no strain or dead time is felt.»
