Country: Japan
Year: 2006
Genre: Comedy, Crime

Plot: The film follows Nanba, a shunned outcast who doesn’t have a girlfriend, any money or prospects, a turnaround from his glory days in high school when he played on the baseball team; his former teammate Ishioka, who is now a policeman because of an elbow injury; and baseball fanatic Eiko, a hopeless alcoholic who spends more of her time drunk than sober. The three share an intense love of baseball — and their destinies are forever intertwined.

  • Kazuyoshi Kumakiri's Green Mind, Metal Bats had its world première at the 35th International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), 2006.
  • Screenplay is based on the eponymous manga Seishun ☆ kinzoku batto - a.k.a. 'Seishun Kinzoku Bat' - by Tomohiro Koizumi.
  • Original literal translation of the original manga was 'Youth and Metal Bats' but partially due to the director’s affinity for Dinosaur Jr’s Green Mind album, the title was changed to “Green Mind and Metal Bats” for the international market.

Green Mind, Metal Bats
Lunapark6, by luna6 source:
«Director Kazuyoshi Kumakiri doesn’t take the easy route by artificially inflating the movie with sappy moments to bring you on the side of its nihilistic main characters. You just become attached to the characters, in spite of their faults, because they possess the qualities of people you know but without the pretenses.»
Twitch, IFFR: Kazuyoshi Kumakiri's GREEN MIND, METAL BATS source:
«When Kumakiri was asked by producer Kimura whether he was interested in filming the manga Green Minds, Metal Bats, he certainly did not expect a particularly good-natured subject. Not only because of the title, but also because Kimura is known for many extreme Miike Takashi films and because Kumakiri himself made his début with the splatter film Kichiku.»
Twitch, 2007 INDIEFEST - Interview With Kumakiri Kazuyoshi source:
«I wanted to take a lighter approach to filmmaking and that was the result you see in Green Mind, Metal Bats. In regards to the heroes and criminals in my films, I believe that a hero in my vision is somebody who does what is right regardless of what society believes.»
