Plot: In 1997, a young man was killed at the bathroom of a burger restaurant in Seoul's Itaewon district located right near U.S. military base. An innocent college student was stabbed nine times to death in the chest and neck. Korean-American teenagers Pearson and Alex were the prime suspects in custody for the murder. Each blamed the other for the horrific crime and the pair throw contradictory evidence at investigators, creating confusion about what actually happened and leaving prosecutor Park to try to figure out the truth.
With budget in $1.2 million (1.5 billion won) the movie stayed in South Korea's weekend top ten list for two weeks grossing 54 million admissions (gathering $3.5 millions (3.98 billion won)).
Based on the true story of the April 3, 1997 murder of college student Jung-pil Jo. The murder took place in the bathroom of Burger King in the Itaewon district of Seoul. Jung-pil Cho was stabbed 9 times in the chest and neck. The names of the murder suspects were changed for the movie. The real case was never solved. The investigation will officially close in April 2012 when the statute of limitations expires.
The movie naturally invites comparison with another film based on a real-life homicide that is also unresolved, 'Memories of Murder'. In that piece, director Bong Joon-ho managed to build up the suspense by adding drama.
'Itaewon' is a neighborhood district in the city of Seoul, South Korea. The district is popular among tourists and U.S. Army personnel (U.S. military base Yongsan Garrison is nearby). Itaewon is known primarily for its many restaurants serving international dishes, a market selling discounted goods, bars, and popular tourist destinations like Insadong & Seoul Tower.

«This obsession with realism is very welcome, and in a way puts Where the Truth Lies in the same cinematic sphere as Running Turtle, genre cinema which banks on realism to overcome its apparent lack of excitement. But the biggest difference between this and Kim Yoon-Seok's latest tour-de-force performance lies exactly in the ingredients. If Running Turtle was helped by near perfect casting, only Jung Jin-Young really shines here, and whatever is wrong with the rest of the cast can be mostly pinpointed to lazy and/or misguided casting.»
