Beat

General info
Original title: Beat (비트)
Country: South Korea
Year: 1997
Genre: Action
IMDB Rating: 6.6 248 votes
Plot: Eternal outsider Min (Kim Sung Su regular Jung Woo Sung of Daisy and Musa) meets his old friend Tae Su (Yoo Oh Sung of Friend and Lump Sugar) after years apart. Now a successful gang leader, Tae Su has a big influence on Min, helping him get through the ranks thanks to his fighting skills, even though Min doesn't seem to want to be part of that kind of life. His friend Hwang Yu (Lim Chang Jung of Sex is Zero) is in fact harboring dreams of success, but he needs someone like Min to escape the pressure of local gangsters. In this special menage a trois enters the beautiful Ro Mi (Ko So Young of Double Agent and Apartment), a model student who Min falls in love with.

Adapted from a graphic novel by Heo Young Man, Beat was the flagbearer of a mini-trend in the mid to late 90s, paving the path for angry youth films finally exploding in the mainstream with Friend four years later.

«This movie is more of a drama than action, it tells the story of 4 people and their lives. The idea for this movie originates from a popular comic book series. The story is very much generation X as in living on the edge with no hope and faded dream. It is about friendship and about love and what both of these things mean to the characters.»
beyondhollywood.com, by Nix source: http://www.beyondhollywood.com/beat-1997-movie-review/
«That being said, “Beat” does little except not bore its viewer. For one, the story is tried and true and been done to death. In homage to its American counterparts, the director even namedrops Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas”. So it’s no surprise that “Beat” doesn’t break any new grounds.»
